Quinoa, the superfood of the Incas

Grown in South America (Peru, Chile and Bolivia), quinoa was the main food of the pre-Columbian civilizations who called it “mother grain” for its high nutritional value and its ability to withstand extreme temperatures, climates both humid and arid, a wide variety of soil conditions and an altitude of up to 4,000meters. The Incas considered it a sacred grain and it formed a part of their staple diet for thousands of years.

From a botanical stand point grain, quinoa is not a grain but is used as if it were. Its correct name is pseudocereal and it belongs the same family as chard, beets or spinach. Quinoa is one of the few plant foods which contain all essential amino acids and vitamins and, compared to other grains, has a larger amount of potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron. It also has a high protein content (16g / 100g), does not contain gluten, is rich in fibre, and easy to digest.

FAO declared 2013 the “International Year of Quinoa” for its unique properties and quinoa was included by NASA as a possible alternative food in the diet of astronauts during long space flights.

What is special about our Quinua Real®?

Although several countries like Peru, Ecuador, China and France grow quinoa, not all variants are equal. Here’s why our Quinua Real is special.

  • Royal quinoa is a variety of quinoa grown only in the areas around the salt flats of Coipasa and Uyuni, in southern Bolivia, between an altitude of 3,600 and 4,000 meters.
  • The farming methods used are the same used by the Incas thousands of years ago and so the plants found in this area can grow up to 2 meters tall. Soil preparation is completely manual, the fertilizer used is llama manure (from local animals) and pests are controlled with extracts of native plants. Planting, harvesting, storage and milling of the grain are also unique to the area.
  • ANAPQUI (National Association of Farmers and Quinoa Producers) is the entity responsible for developing all products of the brand Quinua Real. It is a non-profit organization that invests the proceeds of exports of this pseudocereal, to improve the living conditions of farmers and locals.
  • Our entire range of Quinua Real products are gluten free and the trademark is registered with the Vegan Society.
  • Recently, the CAN (Community of Andean Nations) has recognized the Designation of Origin of this variety of quinoa.
  • Our Quinua Real has reduced saponins, the substances that give it a bitter taste.
